Mental illness and substance abuse are significant problems in Marion County and throughout the state of Indiana. In a new report published by the Center for Health Policy many startling statistics and findings for our community are released. For example, over 1.2 million adult Hoosiers, including 165,000 in Marion County, experience a mental disorder in any given year, 5.4% suffer from a serious mental illness and 7.3% of Hoosiers aged 12 and older meet the criteria for alcohol abuse or dependence in the past year.
There are devastating consequences from the high risk behaviors identified. The Center for Health Policy recommended several strategies for policy makers to address these problems, including raising public awareness of mental illness and substance abuse disorders and the use of evidence based practices.
